Court Clears Way For Nussbaum Probe

Nussbaum hearing

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Oct. 25) -- A federal court in Washington today granted Whitewater special prosecutor Kenneth Starr authority to expand his investigation to include a probe of whether former White House Counsel Bernard Nussbaum lied to Congress when he testified to a House committee in June about the FBI files fiasco.

Documents released by the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington reveal Starr notified the court on Thursday he had begun a preliminary investigation of Nussbaum and requested the expanded authority that the court granted him today.

Starr told the court the Justice Department had received information from the House Committee on Government Reform and Oversight that Nussbaum may have made false statements during sworn testimony on June 26.

Starr said "several committee members" claim that statements made by Nussbaum to the committee that day concerning the role of Hillary Clinton in the hiring of White House personnel security chief Craig Livingstone "appear to be inconsistent" with statements he may have made in 1993 to the FBI Special Agent Dennis Sculimbrene during the course of Sculimbrene's background investigation of Livingstone.
