"I Guess I Panicked"
NEW YORK (AllPolitics, Aug. 9) -- Republican convention keynote speaker Rep. Susan Molinari (R-N.Y.), who recently admitted that she experimented with marijuana in college, has been caught in a little lie. New York One, a Big Apple station, has aired a 1992 Molinari interview in which she denied any previous drug use. (1.2M WAV sound) Oops. "I guess I panicked," Molinari explained this Thursday. "It was an initial panic to a question that I believe every person in America dreads." Molinari received cover from (perhaps) an unlikely corner -- the Clinton Administration. Barry McCaffrey, national drug control policy director said Thursday that the "gotcha" mentality is counter productive to national drug strategy. "Drug use was a generational thing, and we should just accept that and move on," he said. A Family AffairWASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Aug. 9) -- Conventions come and go, but for relatives of Bob Dole, the family reunion of a lifetime is just days away. Guests at the Republican convention will include Dole's sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, neighbors, and friends. Gloria Nelson, Dole's older sister, said her family was not passing up the chance to gather. "How many families does this happen to?" she asked. "He (Dole) draws a lot of strength from his hometown, from his family. I don't think a lot of people understand that." The Dole campaign will pay the airfare and hotel costs for the 80 visitors. Neck And Neck In New JerseyHACKENSACK, N.J. (AllPolitics, Aug. 9) -- A recent poll of New Jersey voters shows that while nearly one in six don't know who is running for the Senate, the race is close to a tie among those that do. The two candidates, Rep. Robert Torricelli (D-N.J.) and Rep. Richard Zimmer (R-N.J.), are running for retiring Sen. Bill Bradley's Senate seat. Torricelli led Zimmer 39-36 percent, but the survey's five point margin of error makes it a toss up. Nearly one voter in four remains undecided. How About Horse And Buggy?
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AllPolitics, Aug. 9) -- President Clinton is tentatively scheduled to leave for the Democratic National convention in Chicago August 26 from West Virginia. Current plans call for Clinton to take a train from West Va. to somewhere in the Great Lakes region before transferring to a Chicago-bound boat. Previously, Democratic officials had planned a reprise of 1992's post-convention bus tour, but that idea is losing steam. Cuomo Wants Democratic CongressNEW YORK (AllPolitics, Aug. 9) -- Former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo is urging liberal Democrats to unite behind President Clinton despite their dissatisfaction with his willingness to sign recently-passed GOP welfare legislation. At a "Victory '96" rally held by the State Democratic Committee in New York City, Cuomo said that voters must elect a Democratic Congress along with re-electing Clinton. "If he's stuck with a Republican Congress, he can say, `That's my mandate'," Cuomo told them. |
