President Defends Policy on Iran Weapons Shipments

[Pres. Clinton]

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, April 9) -- President Bill Clinton today defended his administration's policy of ignoring Iran's wartime arms shipments to Bosnia, which an administration official disclosed yesterday.

"There was absolutely nothing improper done," Clinton said after reporters questioned him during a visit with Greek Prime Minister Constantine Simitis.

Just to be sure, Sen. Robert Dole (R-Kan.) has asked Congress to look into the matter. But though the United Nations banned weapons sales to all sides in the Balkan war, the United States was not bound to enforce it. In fact, many congressional lawmakers opposed the ban and voted to prohibit the U.S. from enforcing the ban.
