You're Our Nominee, Whether You Like It Or Not
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, April 4) -- Leaders of the U.S. Taxpayers Party are exploring ways to draft Pat Buchanan as their nominee for president this fall, even if Buchanan resists the idea.
Taxpayers Party spokesman Howard Phillips called Buchanan, a Republican, "far and away the best candidate for our party."
"My first choice is Pat Buchanan as an active candidate," Phillips told the Associated Press. "My second choice is Pat Buchanan as an inactive candidate."
The party, which hopes to be on the ballot in all 50 states in November, believes in limiting the powers of the federal government and judges and generally opposes U.S. involvement in international organizations.
Buchanan, soundly beaten by Sen. Robert Dole (R-Kan.) in this spring's GOP primaries, has vowed to continue to contest the nomination through the Republican convention in August.
Buchanan spokesman K.B. Forbes declined to comment on the Taxpayers Party idea. "Pat Buchanan is Bob Dole's rival and we are going to continue our campaign of ideas...all the way to San Diego," Forbes told AP.
The U.S. Taxpayers Party will decide how to proceed at its convention, also in San Diego immediately following the GOP gathering.
