After six years in the U.S. House, Allard wants to move to the other side of the Capitol and keep retiring Senator Hank Brown's seat in the party. Allard supports a balanced-budget amendment and a controversial proposal to turn federally owned Colorado ski areas over to resort operators. A social conservative, Allard is against gay rights and favors the death penalty for first-degree murder and certain drug offenses; in the House, he supported a law limiting death-row inmates to one federal appeal.

He differs sharply with Wayne Allard's antiabortion views and, though he agrees with Allard on a balanced-budget amendment, Strickland doesn't think a simultaneous tax cut is possible without sacrificing vital social programs.
