Michael Kinsley is the founding editor of Slate, Microsoft's Seattle-based Web magazine on politics and culture. Kinsley also contributes essays to TIME magazine. Before leaving Washington in 1995 to head up Slate, Kinsley was a senior editor of The New Republic magazine and co-host of the Cable News Network's program "Crossfire."
Kinsley came to the New Republic as managing editor in 1976 and became editor in 1979. From 1981 to 1983 he was editor of Harper's magazine in New York. In 1983 he returned to New Republic to take over the "TRB" cloumn. He served a second stint as editor of the magazine from 1985 to 1989. In 1989 he also served briefly as American Survey Editor of The Economist in London.
Kinsley also has been managing editor of the Washington Monthly and a columnist for the Wall Street Journal . He was born in Detroit in 1951 and attended Harvard College, Oxford University, and Harvard Law School. He is a member of the District of Columbia bar.
