The Boulder County District Attorney's office on Friday released a statement from the woman assaulted by former University of Colorado student Austin James Wilkerson. CNN does not name sexual assault victims.
A Boulder jury convicted Wilkerson in May of one count of sexual assault of a helpless victim and one count of unlawful sexual contact for violating an unconscious classmate. His sentence this week of two years in jail under work release, 20 years of probation and a lifetime registration as a sex offender sparked an outcry from the victim's supporters, who said the punishment was too lenient.
Close watchers also drew comparisons to the sentence of former Stanford student Brock Turner, who in June received six months in jail for raping a woman behind a Dumpster. He's scheduled to be released in September, thereby halving his sentence, although he also has three years of probation and a lifetime registration as a sex offender.
