Washington CNN  —

Chris Christie ripped into Ted Cruz’s performance on the third night of the Republican National Convention, after the Texas senator was booed from the stage Wednesday night for declining to endorse Donald Trump.

“I think it was awful. And quite frankly, I think it was something selfish,” the New Jersey governor told CNN’s Dana Bash.

Christie, who is also a former 2016 rival, said Cruz broke the signed pledge he made to the Republican Party during the nomination process to support the eventual nominee.

Fact checking the speeches

“He signed a pledge. And it’s his job to keep his word,” he said. “I think it was too cute and I think you saw at the end of the speech that the crowd was waiting for him to do the right thing and realized that he wasn’t going to do it.”

Christie said Cruz’s performance indicated he was more concerned with his own political future than winning the White House this cycle.

“None of us should be sitting here worrying about 2020. We have a race to win in 2016,” he said.
