CNN  —

Former “West Wing” star Allison Janney made a surprise appearance at the White House press briefing Friday.

“Josh is out today, I believe he has a root canal, but let’s be honest, I’m better at this anyway,” Janney joked, though if it was unclear if she was referencing White House press secretary Josh Earnest or fictional “West Wing” character Josh Lyman.

Janney, who was famous for playing White House press secretary C.J. Cregg on the NBC drama, entered the briefing in character.

She also promised to perform “The Jackal” for reporters, a reference to a lip sync performance Cregg’s character did in Season 1.

The actress stopped by the White House to take part in a White House Champions of Change ceremony, in which 10 individuals have been awarded for their efforts to prevent substance abuse.

“This is a disease that can touch anybody, and all of us can reduce drug abuse through evidence-based treatment, prevention and recovery,” Janney said.
