In Nevada, Jon Ralston is a veteran political journalist who's reported in Las Vegas and around the state for 30 years. "Nevada is essentially three states," he said. "Two urban areas [Las Vegas and Reno] ... and then rural Nevada, which is the other 15 counties." Las Vegas is the Democratic stronghold, rural Nevada is deeply conservative and Washoe County (home to Reno and Sparks) is the sole swing county.
South Carolina divides into the evangelically- heavy upstate region, the more diverse Midlands, and the Low Country near the ocean that includes Charleston. Our guide to that state is College of Charleston Political Science Professor Gibbs Knotts.
