Story highlights

  • 2016 brings new laws in states across the country
  • They deal with various issues such as hoverboards and BB guns

(CNN)Every year brings with it newly enacted laws, and 2016 is no different.

This year, some of the laws deal with modern technology or social issues.
For example, this year brings new regulations on hoverboards in California.
One must be 16 or older to ride these popular vehicles, according to CNN affiliate KABC.
Similar to bicycles, head protection is also required, and they can only be used on streets with maximum 35 mile per hour speed limits.
At the same time, there are new regulations regarding ear buds, often used for listening to music.
Anyone wanting to hear their music in stereo is out of luck, as anyone driving or cycling must now only listen to ear buds in one ear at a time, according to CNN affiliate KGO.
In Illinois, the controversial "conversion therapy" has been banned for minors, reports CNN affiliate WGN.
In other words, therapists are no longer allowed to attempt to turn gay minors straight.
