UNC lifts brief security alert

Officials lifted a security alert at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus Wednesday.

(CNN)A report of an armed person on or near campus was unsubstantiated, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's media relations department said as the school lifted a brief security alert early Wednesday.

The school had activated campus sirens, temporarily suspended classes and asked people to go indoors shortly before 9 a.m. ET as police checked an unconfirmed report that an armed subject was near the campus Army ROTC center and a chemistry building.
The school issued an all-clear notice about a half-hour later.
UNC at Chapel Hill has more than 29,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students.
