- Man walked into lobby of police department and made suicidal comments
- A negotiator worked with a SWAT team to coax him out of the lobby
- After he surrendered, he was taken to hospital
The incident started Friday night when he walked into the lobby of the Arvada Police Department and made suicidal comments, authorities said.
A negotiator and a SWAT team arrived at the scene and worked to coax him out of the building, said police spokeswoman Jill McGranahan. Authorities used flash bangs to startle him so they could disarm him.
After he surrendered, he was taken to hospital.
The situation was contained to the police station and there was no risk to the surrounding communities, she said.
The lobby is separate from the building, and provides no access to the rest of the police department.
During the incident, the man was alone in the building. There were no prisoners in the holding cells, authorities said.
Arvada is a suburb of Denver.
