International Museum Day: Spectacular new museums to look forward to
Latin American Art Museum, Miami —
Set to open in Miami Beach in 2016, the LAAM will house an impressive collection of Latin American art, as well as several apartments, which will be built at a later phase. The 90,000 square foot (8,300 square meters) institution will rise on Biscayne Boulevard, showcasing works by artists such as Diego Rivera, Fernando Botero, Roberto Matta and Rufino Tamayo.

The structure, designed by Mexican architect Fernando Romero of FR-EE, takes advantage of Miami's tropical climate, using natural air circulation and providing access to open spaces as well as foliage, sea and the sun.

Tate Modern Project, London —
The Tate Modern's expansion is well underway and will be completed at the end of 2016. Designed by the same architects who renovated the original building, Herzog & De Meuron, it will sit to the south of the main complex and will rise 65 meters, matching the iconic chimney.
The museum, which was founded in 1931 by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, was previously located in Manhattan's Upper East Side. The Whitney focuses on 20th and 21st-century American art with a permanent collection of more than 21,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings and other media.

National Art Museum, Beijing —
Seven times larger than the current National Art Museum of China, this entirely new version designed by French master Jean Nouvel will cover an astonishing 1.4 million square feet (130,000 square meters). A completion date has not yet been set. The museum's large internal garden will let the sunlight in and change appearance in accordance to the season: Summer is imagined here.

Defined as "a universal museum in the Arab world," the Louvre Abu Dhabi will open in December 2015 with 300 pieces of art loaned from French museums, including masterpieces by Vincent van Gogh, Andy Warhol, Claude Monet and Henri Matisse.

The interior design by Jean Nouvel highlights a central feature of Arab architecture -- the dome. The Abu Dhabi Louvre will have a contemporary interpretation of the traditional dome, measuring 180 meters in diameter and perforated to allow sunlight through.

Dubbed "City of Culture", this museum project was born out of a former industrial area in Milan. After 12 years of gestation, it finally opened at the end of March, in time for the Expo 2015 that the Northern Italian city is currently hosting.

Smithsonian Institution, Washington —
The venerable Smithsonian Institution, the world's largest museum, will be gradually renovated using designs by the Bjarke Ingels Group. A 20-year, $2 billion plan will overhaul the institution's oldest buildings and south campus. Construction will begin in 2016.

Shenzhen Cultural Complex, China —
A new development that will contain a science museum, an art gallery, a youth center and a mall has recently broken ground in the Chinese city of Shenzhen and is set to be completed in 2017. Dutch architects Mecanoo will transform the area with nearly 100,000 square meters of cultural exhibitions within Longcheng Park.
