(CNN)Beck pulled off the shock of the 57th annual Grammy awards by winning album of the year for "Morning Phase," trumping favorites like best-selling full-lengths by Beyonce, Ed Sheeran, Pharrell Williams and Sam Smith. One night before the Grammys ceremony, Beck told Billboard that even he didn't think that he was the favorite in the category.

"It would be a surprise with this record, honestly," Beck told Billboard on the red carpet of the Clive Davis pre-Grammys party on Saturday night (Feb. 7). Although Beck has been nominated twice before for the top album prize at the Grammys -- in 1997 for Odelay and in 2001 for Midnite Vultures -- he believed that Morning Phase would join those two albums in keeping him an album of the year bridesmaid, but never a bride.
"I think it's just, the moment in music, you know what I mean?" Beck elaborated. "I've been in that category before, and it's usually something that's very definitive of the time."
Beck, who performed "Heart is a Drum" with Coldplay's Chris Martin at the Grammys, also confirmed that he is working on the follow-up to Morning Phase, although he does not have a time frame for its release. When asked how far along the full-length is, Beck said with a laugh, "The optimist says about 70 percent [finished] and the realist says about 35."
