Phoenix, Ariz CNN  — 

President Obama met in Phoenix Thursday with former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly, on the fourth anniversary of the shooting in a grocery story parking lot that gravely wounded her and took the lives of six others, including a federal judge and a nine year-old girl .

Giffords is still recovering, and has set up a foundation along with her husband dedicated to fighting gun violence.

“She looks great,” Obama said, pointing out that since the shooting Giffords has dedicated her life to fighting gun violence. He called her a “hero and a great Arizonan.” he met the couple at Central High School, where the president was giving an address on the rebounding housing market. A top Obama staffer posted a picture of the meeting on Twitter.

Earlier Thursday Giffords tweeted, “4 years ago today in Tucson, we lost friends, loved ones & neighbors. Proud of the compassion & strength our community has shown.”
