(CNN) -- Talk about a debut. Lauren Bacall's first movie role was opposite Humphrey Bogart in the classic "To Have and Have Not." It made her an overnight sensation.
Fans loved the 19-year-old's good looks, husky voice and confident demeanor. And then there was the chemistry with co-star -- and future husband -- Humphrey Bogart.
Her career spanned parts of eight decades. Although she won only one Academy Award (an honorary award), Bacall is considered one of the finest actresses of all time.
