8 Lebanese soldiers killed along Syrian border

(CNN) -- At least eight Lebanese soldiers were killed amid clashes with insurgents who had crossed the border from Syria, Lebanon's official National News Agency reported Sunday.

Douma, located near Damascus, has been under government siege for more than a year, with residents facing dwindling food and medical supplies.The United Nations estimates nearly 200,000 people have been killed in Syria since an uprising in March 2011 spiraled into civil war.

An additional 20 soldiers were wounded during the conflict in Lebanon's Ersal region, NNA said.
The agency said the Lebanese army is continuing its operations in the Ersal area.
