According to Entertainment Weekly, the Australian-born singer, who was on the Fox program in 2008, died Friday at age 35.

The Hollywood Reporter said the cause is believed to be a blood clot in his ankle.

"I just heard the very sad news that Michael Johns has passed away. A truly great guy," Simon Cowell wrote on Twitter. "Rest in peace Michael."

"So Sad. Too soon," wrote Randy Jackson. "Thank you for sharing your talents with us. RIP Michael Johns."
