Editor's note: Moscow has had an interest in Crimea for hundreds of years, with its rich farmland and access to the Black Sea. But it gave Crimea to Ukraine in 1954, when both were part of the Soviet Union. After the USSR collapsed in 1991 there was some local desire for Crimea to become part of Russia again, but lawmakers in Kiev and Simferopol voted for it to stay within Ukraine. However, during the past few weeks Moscow has reasserted its influence in the Black Sea peninsula after Ukraine's pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych was ousted on February 24 2014.
