(CNN) -- Police were searching early Tuesday for a suspect who shot and critically injured a Pennsylvania college student.

The incident occurred near a gym at Widener University Monday evening, said Dan Hanson, a university spokesman.

The injured student was taken to Crozer Chester Medical Center and was in stable but critical condition, Hanson said.

"All indications are that this was not a random act of violence," Hanson said in a written press statement.

Officers were searching for the suspect and believed that the suspect was no longer on the school campus.

Widener University, is a private school in Chester, Pennsylvania, southwest of Philadelphia.
