(CNN) -- A bombing that targeted a military intelligence building in northern Egypt wounded at least six soldiers Saturday night, the al Ahram state newspaper reported.

The incident occurred in the city of Ismailia. It is the latest in a string of attacks against government forces in the area, 125 km (78 miles) northeast of the capital, Cairo.

Three vehicles were set on fire near the building. Witnesses told al Ahram that security guards and armed gunmen exchanged fire until police arrived.

Egypt has been wracked with tension since July, when the nation's first democratically elected president, Mohamed Morsy, was ousted in a coup. The military has been cracking down on militants in the nearby Sinai Peninsula.

CNN's Yasmin Amer contributed to this report.
