Pakistan’s education fell under the spotlight when schoolgirl Malala Yousufzai was shot by the Taliban. Regional literacy levels vary wildly, according to figures by UNESCO, but it is clear Pakistan is not getting a literate population.

According to UNESCO, 69 percent of Pakistan’s male population can read and write while only 40 percent of women are literate. For the Maldives and Sri Lanka the numbers of literate men and women are all in the 90s. Only Bhutan and Bangladesh has a less literate male population, and only Bhutan has a less literate adult female population, the figures show.
