Baghdad CNN  —

At least 14 people, including 10 border guards, were shot to death Wednesday by gunmen pretending to be a military checkpoint on a central Iraq highway, police said in Ramadi.

The victims were driving in two vehicles near al-Nukhaib highway southeast of Ramadi in the afternoon when they were stopped at a fake security checkpoint manned by the gunmen in military uniforms, Ramadi police said.

Iraqi security forces are investigating the incident, and no further details were immediately available, police said.

Separately, a police officer was killed and two others were wounded after gunmen attacked a police checkpoint in the al-Jolan area northwest of Falluja on Wednesday morning, police said.

Ramadi and Falluja are in Iraq’s Anbar province. Ramadi is its capital.
