updated 2:25 PM EST, Fri March 8, 2013

(CNN) -- Two German citizens held by the Colombian rebel group National Liberation Army since November were released Friday in a rural part of northeast Colombia, the International Committee of the Red Cross said.

The civilians were handed over to a humanitarian team made up of Red Cross delegates and two members of a committee set up to facilitate dialogue with the armed group.

Colombia has been seeking an end to nearly 50 years of conflict with rebels.
