Suicide blast kills 16 in Afghanistan

(CNN) -- A suicide blast in the northern Afghanistan city of Kunduz has killed 16 people -- 10 police officers and six civilians, police said.

The explosion near the main roundabout in the city's downtown injured 20 people, Police Chief Samiullah Qatra said Monday.

Demonstrators were gathering when the bomb exploded, said Gulam Muhammad Farhad, head of the National Directorate of Security.

The reason for the demonstration was not immediately clear, and additional details were not immediately available.
