At least 19 people died and seven were injured in the provincial municipality of Rodriguez de Mendoza, in northern Peru when a bus plunged into a ravine Thursday night, according to the state-run Andina news agency.
CNN affiliate America TV showed pictures of the bus that rolled over 150 meters and broke into pieces.
Local authorities declared a day of mourning, ordered public institutions to lower their flags half staff and postponed all the Mothers' Day festivities.
Edison Lopez Collazos, mayor of Rodriguez de Mendoza, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and the deep sorrow felt in the province.
Andina reported that the bus belongs to the company Zelada and was heading from the city of Chachapoyas to Rodriguez de Mendoza.
Local police are investigating the causes of the accident.
