Wozniacki wins tough opener in home tournament in Copenhagen

(CNN) -- Defending champion Caroline Wozniacki had to battle past Poland's Urszula Radwanska 7-6 6-2 in the opening round of her home tournament in Copenhagen.

The former world number one has won the two previous editions of the indoor hard court event, but was in danger of losing the opening set to Radwanska, who forged an early break of service.

But the Danish home favorite retrieved the break to force a tiebreak which she won seven points to four.

The second set proved easier as Wozniacki broke twice to reach the second round.

Second seed Angelique Kerber of Germany was also extended in her opening match against Stephanie Foretz of France.

Foretz took the opening set before Kerber, who won the WTA indoor title in Paris last month, hit back to win 4-6 6-2 7-5.

Jelena Jankovic of Serbia, who has lost in the opening round of her last three tournaments, is the third seed in Denmark as she bids to get her career back on track.

On the clay in Barcelona, there was a big upset as former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone made an early exit.

She lost 6-4 6-3 to Olga Govortsova of Belarus to continue a poor run which has seen her lose six of her last seven matches.

Both players battled a shaky service with Schiavone having eight double faults and Govortsova nine, but it was the latter who adapted the better.

"I knew I had to be aggressive against her, and I did a good job of that today," she told the WTA official website.

The tournament's second seed Julia Goerges won eight straight games from 4-4 in the first set to dispatch Aravane Rezai of France 6-4 6-0.
