(CNN) -- Police are investigating the death of a French academic who was found in a midtown New York hotel room on Tuesday afternoon, according to a New York Police Department spokesperson.
There was no sign of foul play, according to police, but officials said they are investigating to rule it out.
Richard Descoings, who was director of the Institute of Political Studies in Paris and a member of France's government advisory board, was found dead in the Michelangelo Hotel about 1 p.m. Tuesday, police said. Hotel security went to check on Descoings after he didn't check out of the hotel. Security found the 54-year-old in bed and called police.
Descoings was found with blood coming from his mouth, according to a fire department spokesperson.
