At least 12 people were killed and 43 injured Tuesday morning when chemical plant exploded in China's northern Hebei province, according to state media.

The blast destroyed a factory workshop and shattered window panes as far away as 2 kilometers, officials told Xinhua, a state-run news agency.

The injured received treatment at a nearby hospital and tremors from the explosion were felt in villages near the plant, the agency reported.

Authorities say the facility manufactures pesticide products and chemicals such as guanidine nitrate, which is a high-energy fuel used in some gas generator and solid-rocket propellant applications.
