Italian giants Inter Milan were jeered from the field after they suffered a 3-0 defeat to Bologna -- their fifth loss in six games.
Claudio Ranieri's side now lie sixth in the Serie A standings, six points behind Rome club Lazio who are third and occupy the final European Champions League qualification spot.
Two goals from Marco Di Vaio and one from Robert Acquafresca sealed Inter's fate just five days after they were humbled by bottom side Novara. They are now 11 points off AC Milan in top spot.
Supporters made their displeasure known and some sang the name of Jose Mourinho -- the Portuguese coach who won the Champions League with Inter in 2010. He is now in charge at Real Madrid.
"We're not playing to our potential and we're going through a particular moment, we must take responsibility," Ranieri was quoted as saying by news agency AFP.
"I apologize to the president and to the fans. Whilst it was 2-0 we tried, we pushed but everything fell apart with the third.
"There's bitterness, this is the third (defeat in a row). In several games the first chance they get, they score.
"In one minute they scored twice. We must grit our teeth, like I said yesterday, we're playing with 10kg on our backs. We expected a tough game but not like this."
Bologna moved five points clear of the relegation zone after their win -- only their third success on the road this season.
Napoli leapfrogged Inter after they won 3-0 at Fiorentina. Two goals from Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani and one from Ezequiel Lavezzi took the club into fifth.
In Germany, TSG Hoffenheim and Mainz drew 1-1. An own goal from Nikolce Noveski put Hoffenheim in front on nine minutes but Egypt international Mohamed Zidanrescued a point for Mainz.
Hoffenheim stay tenth on 26 points while Mainz are in 12th on 24 points.
