Paris (CNN) -- The man who grabbed French President Nicolas Sarkozy by his shoulder and pulled him up against a barricade was given a six-month suspended sentence Friday and allowed to leave the court freely.

Hermann Fuster, 32, was charged with "violence against a person holding public authority," and will be required to complete two days of community service, according to a police spokesman.

Television footage showed Fuster being being wrestled to the ground by four bodyguards Thursday after he attacked Sarkozy in the town of Brax, in southwest France.

The president appeared to have been seized by the shoulder of his jacket as he shook hands with members of the public lined up behind a metal security barrier in the town, near Agen.
