(CNN) -- A police officer in central France lost control of his van in a roundabout and struck a group of children Monday afternoon, fatally injuring one, according to a prosecutor.

Sixteen children were injured, seven of them critically, Tours, France, prosecutor Philippe Varin said. The children were 9 and 10 years old, Varin said.

"The policeman driving the van said he lost control of the vehicle and that is how the accident happened," Varin said.

Results of an alcohol test were negative, he said.

It was unclear if the officer would face any charges.

The incident happened in the Indre-et-Loire department, near Tours, said police spokesman Benoit Jacques.

A psychological unit has been set up at the Indre-et-Loire police station, Jacques said.
