London (CNN) -- In a bucolic, picturesque town in southwest England, British police say they arrested a man linked to crimes against humanity and torture in Peru during the 1980s and '90s.
The Metropolitan police confirmed Thursday that they arrested the 46-year-old Peruvian man in the town of Tiverton. He was released on bail and is to return to a central London police station in July.
Details of the man's involvement in crimes in Peru were not immediately available. During the 1980s and '90s, Peruvian forces battled rebels from the Shining Path and other Marxist groups. The terrorists regularly committed bombings of infrastructure in the country, while the military has been accused of killing civilians in its hunt for rebels.
Authorities searched a home in Tiverton relating to the arrest, which happened Tuesday, police said.
