New Delhi, India (CNN) -- A passenger train rammed into a waiting train in southern India, killing nine people and leaving dozens injured, officials said Wednesday.

At least 60 passengers onboard the stationary train were injured, railway spokesman Anil Kumar Saxena said.

The accident happened Tuesday at a stop sign in Tamil Nadu state.

Emergency crews have rescued all the survivors trapped in the wrecked carriages, he said.

India's massive rail network, used by hundreds of thousands of passengers daily, has a poor safety record.

Official figures show 100 train accidents occurred in India in the 2009-10 fiscal year and 115 in 2008-09.
