Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) -- A suspected U.S. drone strike three people Sunday in North Waziristan, a volatile tribal region in northwest Pakistan, Pakistani intelligence officials said.

The attack happened near Khaasu Khel along the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan, according to the officials. The officials asked not to be named because they are not authorized to speak to the media.

The last drone strike in Pakistan targeted and killed al Qaeda No. 2 Atiya Abdul Rahman last month. The targets of Saturday's strike were not immediately known.

North Waziristan is the home base of the Pakistani Taliban and described by Washington as a safe haven for militant groups fueling the insurgency across the border in Afghanistan.
