Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN) -- A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia's Sumatra island early Tuesday morning, damaging buildings and killing two people, officials said.
The earthquake hit in the North Sumatra region of the island at 12:55 a.m. and was 110 km (68 miles) deep, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The quake caused fires that burned several stores, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a senior official of the local National Disaster Management Agency.
No tsunami warning was issued as the quake was deep underground and too far inland to generate one.
