(CNN) -- An American woman was arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle 3,500 rounds of ammunition from El Paso, Texas, into Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, according to a Wednesday night news release from the Chihuahua state attorney general's office.

The woman -- identified in the news release as Gwendolyn Marrufo Sanchez -- was arrested by the Mexican military at a check point on the Lerdo International Bridge, the release said. No other information on the woman such as her age or hometown was given.

According to the news release, the woman was traveling on a bus with other passengers coming from El Paso when it was searched by the Mexican military.

Ammunition rounds were hidden in cans of food and clothes in the woman's possession, the release said.

During the inspection of the bus, soldiers became suspicious of the items because of their weight. Inside the containers, according to the release, they found a total of 130 boxes of high-powered ammunition.

Sanchez was being held on charges of violating of Mexico's federal firearms and explosives law, according to the news release.
