(CNN) -- The U.S. Consulate General in Mexico's violence-torn city, Ciudad Juarez, has issued a warning for American citizens in the state of Chihuahua.
The message cautions that recent successes against drug cartel figures could put Americans in Mexico at risk.
It also warns that recently received information indicates that a cartel could try to target the U.S. Consulate in Ciudad Juarez or other U.S. ports of entry.
Americans who plan to travel in Chihuahua are encouraged to join the State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program and to keep their contact information updated.
