(CNN) -- Mexican authorities uncovered a mass grave containing at least 17 bodies, the state-run Notimex news agency reported, citing federal and state officials.
The bodies were discovered Tuesday in the town of San Miguel Totolapan, in the state of Guerrero, Mexico's defense ministry said.
The military was conducting a routine patrol near the town when a resident alerted them to the location of the mass grave, the ministry said.
Some of the human remains were wrapped up in a blanket, the ministry said.
At least 17 bodies were recovered from the site, though it was possible there could be more, state police director Fernando Monreal said, according to Notimex.
