(CNN) -- South African authorities are investigating a train collision that injured 857 people outside Johannesburg, a Metrorail spokesman told CNN Friday.

Three people remain hospitalized with critical injuries after Thursday night's collision, the spokesman said.

The two Metrorail trains -- a business express and a regular commuter -- collided in Soweto.

Last month, a train collision west of Pretoria killed one person and left 100 people with minor injuries. In that wreck, the trains were traveling on the same track when they hit each other.
