(CNN) -- Former Alabama Gov. Bob Riley was hospitalized in Fairbanks, Alaska, Sunday after a motorcycle accident.

"He broke seven ribs and punctured a lung, but he's in good spirits," said Dave Stewart, Riley's former chief of staff. "According to family, the doctor said he's in good shape."

Riley began a cross-country motorcycle trip from Alabama to Alaska two weeks ago and made it into Alaska Friday, Stewart said. The former governor was riding down a gravel road near Fairbanks when he struck a slick spot and fell.

Riley's wife, Patsy, told CNN affiliate WSFA that "God was watching out for him."

"It could have been so much worse," she said.

Riley served eight years as governor of Alabama. His second term ended in January.
