(CNN) -- A multiple alarm fire injured one firefighter and sent him to a local hospital Friday in Pinckneyville, Illinois, an emergency official said.
Firefighters from nearby communities worked to extinguish the flames as smoke billowed out of the buildings and onto the streets, video showed.
The flames consumed two large buildings -- an old antique mall and the opera house -- in Pinckneyville's town square, said David Searby, Perry County's emergency management director.
The firefighter was sent to the hospital after a wall apparently fell on him; his condition is unknown, Searby said.
