(CNN) -- The relief and recovery effort in Japan is slowly beginning after the devastating earthquake and tsunami struck in March.
The fifth annual Japan Day in Central Park was devoted to sending a message of support and encouragement to the people of Japan, and raising funds for Japan to rebuild and recover.
CNN's Sandra Endo hosted the event on Sunday, May 22 in New York's Central Park, where thousands of people came out to enjoy the day's festivities.
Japan Day is an event designed to promote deeper understanding of Japanese culture.
The festival included a stage show, free Japanese food and activity tents featuring video games, robots, origami, calligraphy, traditional toys and games.
