(CNN) -- Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice raised sharp questions Tuesday about how Osama bin Laden could "hide in plain sight" in Pakistan, saying both the United States and Pakistan's government "need to know" how it happened.

"It's not a good thing for Pakistan. It's not a good thing for us," she told CNN.

"President (Asif Ali) Zardari and his team need to understand better how Osama bin Laden could hide in plain sight in that kind of compound without the knowledge of high-ranking officials," she said.

U.S. politicians and military officials have roundly criticized Pakistan for not being more robust in the fight against al Qaeda, the Taliban and other militants who have a strong presence along the Afghan-Pakistani border, although U.S. President Barack Obama said Pakistan's counterterrorism cooperation with the United States helped lead the military to the al Qaeda leader.
