(CNN) -- Firefighters in Brattleboro, Vermont, were battling a five-alarm blaze at an apartment complex early Monday, authorities said.
The fire has rendered 53 of 59 units uninhabitable, according to a Red Cross official.
"Our biggest challenge will be finding housing for 53-plus residents in such a small community," said Bruce Pollock of the Red Cross.
A local shelter has taken in 14 residents, but more are expected, according to shelter officials.
Pollock said five Red Cross units are currently at the scene providing food and water to emergency responders and apartment residents
