(CNN) -- Ten sailors aboard a U.S. Navy vessel were injured Wednesday after a jet on the ship caught fire, officials said.
The incident occurred on USS John C. Stennis Wednesday afternoon in waters near southern California, the Navy said.
The sailors were on the flight deck of the vessel when the jet "suffered a catastrophic engine failure and subsequently caught fire," the Navy said in a press statement.
Four of the sailors were flown to the Naval Medical Center in San Diego and were in stable condition.
The fire was extinguished and did not cause major damage to the ship.
