(CNN) -- London 2012 organizers have unveiled the first brand-new venue for the Olympic Games to be held in the city in 18 months' time.

The $150 million velodrome, which will host the track cycling events, opened this week after two years of intensive construction work.

The chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority John Armitt said the completion of the venue, both on time and on budget, marked the East London site's "biggest milestone to-date."

CNN has captured some of the key moments of Tuesday's grand opening in images.
