Los Angeles (CNN) -- Reports that Katie Couric will join ABC for a day-time talk show and fill-in anchor work are premature since CBS has the right to match any network offers, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

Couric's representative told CNN on the record Thursday that there is "nothing new to announce."

One source, who asked not to be identified, said "nothing's happened."

"Nothing is going to happen for some weeks until there is clarity as to what CBS will do with regard to matching an offer to another suitor," the source said.

Talks are continuing between Couric and ABC, another source said. Couric's role at ABC beyond a syndicated talk show still needs to be determined, the source said.

The possibility that a Couric talk show would bump the long-running soap "General Hospital" off ABC's afternoon schedule is "pure speculation," the source said.

Couric's CBS contract expires next month.

CNN's Brittany Kaplan contributed to this report.
