CNN iReport(CNN) -- Like the cellphone, the point-and-shoot is a compact and inexpensive alternative to many higher-end cameras but with more settings to allow for adjustments to light, color and focus.
Though the point-and-shoot in its nascent form was strictly a camera for stills, many new high-end ones can record quality video. And a perennial favorite, the disposable camera, is still a solid alternative for those on a budget.
Verdict: A solid intermediate step between cellphones and more expensive or specialized recording devices.
